Optimize Learning at Home with These Decor Ideas

Could your homeschool area (or areas - if you tend to move about your house like our family does!) use a bit of sprucing up?

Or maybe you'd just like to get all those school supplies organized AND looking nice?

If you've felt a bit overwhelmed about how to decorate your homeschool room, that's totally normal!

Perhaps you homeschool in an area also put to use for other purposes (like our family - our main homeschool space is our dining room)?

Or maybe you're a lucky one and have a room dedicated just to homeschooling? BUT, you're not quite sure what to include (and exclude) from this special learning space?

Decorating homeschool classrooms can be exciting, yet paralyzing. You want to make it a space that encourages learning and exploration. But, you don't want it to be too busy or boring.

Oh, and that space needs to be practical and organized! You and your kids need to quickly and easily find supplies and resources.

The good news: You can keep your homeschool room simple, organized, and looking nice. When you work with the space you have, you'll find that you can turn it into a homeschool area that works for you and you can be pleased with.

Since you're here for a bit of inspiration, here are some of my favorite homeschool room ideas to help you stay organized while making your room look beautiful.Get ready for an awesome homeschool year!

17 Homeschool Room Ideas for Delightful Decor & More

Think about where you'll primarily be homeschooling.

Will you have a dedicated space? Are you working with a small space or have a lot of room to use?

Amazing homeschool rooms optimize the space you have with a mix of your style and needs.

1. Use Alphabet Cards as a DIY Ceiling Border

If you want to add a cute border around your school room, consider using alphabet cards.

Alphabet cards are inexpensive and come in all sorts of designs and colors. Use these cards on one wall or around all of the walls.

It’s a fun way to add some details without spending a lot of money.

Plus, you can have your kids search for particular letters.

If you have older kids, a great idea is to have your kids add spelling, vocabulary, even foreign language words, under each letter.

2. Paint the Walls a Happy Color

When you’re coming up with a homeschool room decor, you don’t have to leave the walls white.

Think about the mood that you want to create in your room and paint the walls that color.

Depending on the tints or shades, yellows or blues can be wonderful.

3. Consider a Color Scheme

It’s easy to go crazy with different colors for your work space. It's a homeschool room, after all!

However, it can also make it easy for the room to become too overwhelming for your kids with bright colors everywhere.

Come up with 3-4 colors that you want to stick to in your homeschool room. And try to stick with them.

4. Consider a Map

A map is practical and decorative.

It might be a map of the country where you live or the continents. You can include a world map or even a variety of historical maps, depending on what you're studying this year.

Framing the map can make it look even nicer on your walls. It might even be the main decor on one of your walls - and you add pieces around it.

5. Create a Cozy Corneror Reading Nook

An amazing thing to add to your homeschool room is a cozy corner.

In this corner, think comfortable and inviting.

Things like bean bag chairs, a basic of blankets, and books that the kids can read and enjoy. You can add board games, too.

This type of simple homeschool room decor is so engaging that your kids will probably want to hang around it, even when it’s not school time.

6. Make a Homeschool Desk Space

If you have the room, make a desk space for each child.

One way to do this on a budget is to take child desks and line the wall with them.

Another idea is to use folders or large books to section off areas on a larger table. I've done this with my boys on our big dining room table when they need to focus (or take a test). Ask your kids for their desk ideas, too.

Also, it can be a good idea to encourage your kids to maintain space - a.k.a. bubble. I do this ALL the time with my boys to "keep hands to self".

Chat with your kidsabout their homeschooldesk ideas, too.

7. Use Metal Buckets for Storage

One of the best ways to keep pencils, scissors, and other supplies that kids need when working at their desks is to use metal buckets hooked onto a metal rod.

Or put these types of buckets on shelves or rolling carts.

These buckets are the perfect size for crayons, markers, and other art supplies that your kids need.

This inexpensive decor idea looks great and doubles as decor along with being practical.

8. Use Rolling Carts for Art Storage(& More)

Rolling carts are other practical items to add to your schoolroom that also doubles as decor.

These accessories are super popular right now for families that need to save space while homeschooling.

My favorite way to use these types of carts is as an art "creation station".

Fill the cart with all of your kids’ favorite art and craft supplies in jars and baskets.

We also have a morning time cart to make it easy to enjoy our read-alouds and other homeschool morning time activities wherever we want.

Then, you can move it around the room whenever it’s time for your kids to work on their projects or homeschool fun activities.

Wheel it back to the corner whenever it’s done, but while it sits there, the cart looks organized and like part of the room.

**Make sure to get a rolling cart with wheels that lock!

9. Have a Magnetic Chalkboard, White Board, or Bulletin Board

A magnetic chalkboard (or whiteboard) is a big YES!

Having a chalkboard is awesome for teaching your kids. You can put up your daily schedule (or routine), spelling words, diagrams, or whatever else your kids need to see to rock your homeschool that day.

A magnetic board can also double as a space to display your kids' work.

Oh, a chalkboard wall (use chalkboard paint to make) can be super fun!

It's a great thing to wisely use the vertical space in your homeschool area(s).

10. Use Low Bookshelves& Storage Spaces

Low bookshelves and storage spaces are beautiful.

Imagine a Montessori classroom (or check this one out) with uncluttered shelves that hold the necessary items your kids need for that year.

You can devote a bookshelf to each subject area.

And use the tops of the shelves to display works of art, hold homeschool supplies, or hold plants throughout the room.

11. Rugs Are a So Comfy

Rugs in your homeschool room make it so comfortable.

They add a homey look and feel that make it the perfect space for younger kids to play on the floor.

It can also make it easy to clean because you can shake rugs outside to get rid of the little bits of paper (or crumbs if you have little Hobbits like I do that like second breakfasts 😉).

I like fluffy rugs in areas that kids might sit on the ground.

Jute rugs are great for under tables, but you might also like a rug from Ruggables, which are machine washable. You can toss these rugs into your washer - who doesn’t love that?

12. Frame Homemade Art and Educational Posters

One of my favorite homeschool room decor ideas is to give your kids blank canvas and allow them to create works of art to hang in your room.

Canvases last longer and hang better on your walls. You can even frame them for a finished look.

A fun idea is to have your kids create a new work of art and display their progression each month.

This artwork means a lot more than anything you’d buy in a store, and it’s much cheaper to have your kids create it!

13. Have a Place to Display Work

Think about different ways to display work that will fit your homeschool room area.

Corkboards are great options for homeschool rooms. Whether you have a small or large one, a corkboard gives you a way to display (and switch out) recent works that your child completed artworks or new spelling words.

Other ideas include hanging a clothesline with clips, decorative frames, or simply using sticky tack to switch out impressive work.

14. Use Open Shelvingor Shelving Units

Open shelves are outstanding for small items, books, folders, and more.

You might want to display baskets of small manipulatives for math class or a basket of crayons for art time.

Open shelving is the perfect way to hold all of these items while making them look decorative as well.

15. Add Plants to Your Homeschool Room

Plants are a magical addition to your homeschool room.

Consider hanging plants over shelves, flowers on your homeschool table, and tall plants wherever you have space.

Not only do plants create a calming, beautiful aesthetic, but plants are educational for children. Growing plants from seeds is a great science activity that teaches the life cycle of a seed or plant.

Now, as a mama with a brown thumb, I'll say this: you may want to see if one of your kids has a green them OR consider cacti. Any bit of green can do a world of good!

16. Corner Shelves Can Hold Special Items

Corner shelves are inexpensive, but they can look great in a homeschool room.

Use this space to display things like a nice microscope, plants, or other special items that you want out of reach and not broken.

17. Add a Special Space for Games & Hands-On Activities

Designate a special area for your kids to easily access hands-on activities.

These types of activities are perfect for quiet use during read-aloud time and more.

Also, if you'd like to include more fun activities into your homeschool time, a storage space for games is a must. A storage bin can work!

These 17+ homeschool room ideas are just a start!

Use these ideas for inspiration to create a homeschool area that works for your family AND looks incredible. The important thing is that you all feel comfortable and can enjoy a great learning environment for a successful school year.
