When I buy bread, I mostly make vegetable sandwich or just give bread butter jam for Aj. He rarely asks for toasts. Then it will be plain toast with butter or cheese toast for him.
I once had a lot of sugar syrup in leftover without knowing what to do with it. Then I just dipped my bread and made sweet toast and it tasted just awesome!
I thought why not try the Eggless French toast. I always had an eye on Sharmi’s recipe, so I got an idea about the recipe from her’s and made it. It's easily adaptable for an Indian kitchen.
It is very apt for the hurry burry mornings and your kid will love it surely. Or make it for yourself on a lazy weekend morning. It's a treat with all the taste and flavors.
Ingredients
For eggless French toast version using something to coat the bread without making it different in texture. It's corn starch (white corn flour) in this recipe in place of egg.
If you are vegetarian or even if you run out of eggs and want to make French toast, this is the recipe for you. You will sure love it.
Use Brioche bread for best results. Cinnamon and vanilla is also a must in a French toast.
Making it vegan
Since it is already egg free, you can make this vegan too if you are one. Just replace milk with non-dairy milk like almond milk. Instead of butter you can use coconut oil or vegan butter.
Serve with maple syrup or agave, instead of honey. Carefully choose your bread too reading the ingredients in it.
Serving suggestions
Always serve warm with a glass of milk, fruits or even you can serve with your favorite fruit compote.
Variations
- Make it stuffed version.
- Fancy it by making it as French toast roll-ups.
- Any bread can be used, I love milk bread, Brioche loaf is said to be the best for French toast.

Cup measurements
Ingredients
- 6 Bread slices
- 2 tablespoon Custard powder vanilla flavor, refer notes for substitutions
- ¼ teaspoon Cinnamon powder
- 2 tablespoon Sugar heaped
- ¼ tsp Vanilla extract Optional
- ½ cup Milk
- 3 tablespoon Butter
Instructions
Boil milk and mix it well with custard powder and sugar in a wide bowl.
Heat a non stick pan and grease with ghee/butter.
Dip the bread slice very quickly both sides and toast it both sides in low flame until it gets cooked and golden in color.
Notes
- If you don't have custard powder, replace with cornstarch and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract.
- You can serve with nutmeg or cinnamon powder sprinkle along with sugar powder.
- Do not let the bread get soaked in custard mix for more time. Not more than a second or two.
- Cook in low flame slowly while toasting as that only give you a crisp and golden crusty toast.

When you dip, do it quickly, no need to get it soaked. Also make sure its not too watery

Hi raks I tried this but the toast stuvk to the pan ultimately I dipped the scrambled bread in the custard n ate it up...! Cud u tell me how to avoid sticking.?
Reply
Raks anand
If your bread gets soggy then it gets stuck to pan. So use less watery custard coating. Also give quick dip.
You can add generous butter too to avoid sticking.Reply

Hi Raji, your recipes never failed me. I tried this once and it immediately became my hubby's no 1 fav breakfast. I always serve it with fresh strawberries or banana and it's super yummy. Also, I leave it for 3 to 4 mins and then serve it, it's super crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Thank you so much
