If it’s been on your mind or theirs we’re here to help. I can remember having my first job at 13 or 14 years old. As a teenager, I had a newspaper route, shampooed hair at a salon, and worked retail in a number of different shops. Many jobs that existed for teenagers then no longer exist today or they have different age requirements.

I realize that when our teenagers hit 18 years old they can pretty much get a job anywhere. The challenge is when they are 14, 15, or 16 years old. Where can they get a job? How can they get to work if they don’t drive?

We’ve tried to address both the questions in this blog post. We start with suggesting jobs and businesses that hire teenagers. We’ll break it down by age.

Then we talk more specifically about jobs for teenagers in New Jersey. Not just summer jobs for teenagers but also jobs that are available all year round. Many of these jobs have online job sites where teens can learn more about the job and also apply online. We’ll tell you who is hiring and how your teen can apply for a job.

Finally, we’ll introduce ways to get to a job that doesn’t rely on mom and dad doing the driving. When you start to think about it, there really are a lot of options.

How old does my teen have to be to get a job in New Jersey?

Teens can get ‘official’ jobs in New Jersey starting at the age of 12 years old, though many employers prefer to set a minimum age of 16 years old.

Many of the NJ employers we’ve spoken with will hire teenagers as young as 14 years old. Children under 18 years old (minors) who work in New Jersey must have an employment certificate — also called “working papers.”

The laws for working teenagers changed on June 1, 2023. It is now easier than ever for teens to get working papers. Schools are no longer involved and the process is all online. Minor workers, their caregivers, and employers all fill out their respective parts of our streamlined online application instead of using the old paper form.

When it comes to looking for jobs for teenagers don’t stop with this list. The above age listings may be flexible. Some age requirements might be set by law, but others may be flexible. If your teen is more mature than other teens their age, they may be able to get hired for positions usually reserved for older teens.

Also, keep in mind not all positions are advertised publicly. If your teen loves the beach and boardwalk, tell them to walk the boardwalk and look for help wanted signs. Or if there’s a shop or restaurant they really like, it doesn’t hurt to stop in and ask if the business is hiring.

The same can be said for downtown districts or villages. Historic Smithville, Downtown Hammonton, Downtown Haddonfield all have shops, cafes, and restaurants, that might be looking for temporary or more permanent help. The businesses may not be hiring as many teens as the employers listed above, but if the business even just needs one employee, that business might be willing to hire your teenager.

Public Transportation Options for Teens in New Jersey

Taking public transportation can be a great option for teens needing to get to summer jobs in New Jersey. Many offer a discount for students, they just need to show their student ids.

New Jersey Transit

New Jersey Transit can provide ways for teens to work in New Jersey, Philadelphia, and New York City.

Amtrak

New Jersey has six Amtrak stations and connections to many Amtrak routes. Most of the long-distance trains stop at Newark Penn Station and Trenton, and the Keystone route provides additional service to other cities. Daily commuters or occasional riders who transfer between SEPTA and New Jersey Transit at the Trenton Transit Center can purchase one-way tickets, round trip tickets, or monthly interagency passes. It serves all points around the State of New Jersey from Market Street in Philadelphia, 30th Street Station and Trenton Transit Center.

Jitney

The Jitney serves Atlantic City and Cape May

Tram cars in Wildwood

Take local shuttles and ferries

LBI -Tuckerton Water Ferry

The Tuckerton Seaport has a ferry service available for teenagers to use to get to jobs on LBI! The ferry runs Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays July 4th weekend through Labor Day . Learn more at tuckertonseaport.org. Teens can reserve a seat in advance.

Liberty Landing Ferry is an option for teens to get to jobs in Jersey City or Lower Manhattan.

Liberty Landing Ferry runs from Liberty Landing Marina in Jersey City to Warren Street in Jersey City and then right to the World Financial Center Terminal in lower Manhattan. Seastreak Ferry

Cape May – Lewes Ferry

The Cape May – Lewes Ferry transports passengers to and from Cape May, NJ and Lewes, Delaware. Summer season 2024 round-trip tickets are $18, and you can ferry your personal vehicle for another $68 round-trip. Bikes are allowed on the ferry for no charge with a paying passenger.
