The Package Says It’s For Your Package

I don’t claim to be the brightest person in the world. I even don’t claim to be very astute at picking up on social cues. In fact, I am pretty dense at times.

When my girlfriend bought me this razor I assumed it was just another pair of clippers with some fancy marketing behind it. I had assumed it was a hint to shave my head and my beard since she prefers my clean-shaven look over my scruffy mountain man look that happens periodically when I don’t feel like shaving for 1 – 2 months at a time. It didn’t help that she had been complaining about me not shaving my head or beard for the past few weeks

I missed the words on the front of the package that said it’s “DESIGNED FOR GROIN GROOMING”. I thought the “SkinSafe Technology” that “Helps protect from manscaping accidents” was just fancy marketing speak.

I assumed the “We Save Balls” message on the side of the package that mentioned them partnering with the Testicular Cancer Society was mostly just because it was a mens’s grooming product.

I guess was right about that in some respects, but in other respects it just flew over my head. Again on the back of the package I missed the “DESIGNED FOR GROIN GROOMING” message and even missed the “YOUR BALLS WILL THANK YOU” on the inside flap when I opened it up.

Your Balls Will Thank You – How Did I Miss This?!

You know what? I just might be the most aloof man in history.

Incorrectly Using the Lawn Mower 3.0

Since I missed all the marketing about it being designed for groin grooming I initially tested it on my face and head. It took about 11 minutes for me to shave both my face and head. Needless to say I wasn’t very impressed with the results. The notes I took right after the shave were

  • Hard to get an even cut.
  • Doesn’t get too close to the skin. If you’re looking for a clean shave it will disappoint you.
  • Hard to get the mustache are right underneath nose.
  • Even without guard you’re not getting a very close shave.
  • Blade appears to be made out of plastic and eventually has to be replaced.

Even though I didn’t realize it was specifically for the nether regions I still tried it out on my groin. My notes for this indicated:

  • Decent for man parts. Hard to cut some hairs, but you can hold the hair taut and it will cut it. However, you’re introducing the risk of getting skin caught and mangled.

Designed For Groin Grooming

It wasn’t until now that I realized my ineptitude. I finally got around to taking photos of the razor and the packaging and that’s when I actually read everything on the package and realized it wasn’t designed to be used for two of three body areas I had shaved with it.

At that moment I had the feeling that all mens experience when they miss a hint from a woman. In my defense, I did get the hint that I needed to shave, but I was completely off the mark on what she wanted me to shave with it.

I asked her if I should be offended that she bought me it for my birthday. I likened it to me buying her a vacuum cleaner for her birthday. She was very animated and adamant that she had asked me on numerous occasions for ideas for a birthday gift, but I never her gave any.

Apparently, she gave me one last opportunity that I blew off and she saw a TV ad for it and decided to buy me one.

Review After Using the Lawn Mower 3.0 Correctly

Back of the box.

Now that I knew the intended I use case, I gave it another try. With my expectations properly set I went about “mowing the lawn”. Here are my thoughts after my second time shaving with it:

  • It makes complete sense why you don’t get a close shave. The closer shave you get the more at risk you are for mangling your man bits. This especially true since the skin in this region tends to be not very firm.
  • It does a good job of cutting through long pubic hair. It’s faster than scissors and doesn’t get clogged up on longer hair like a typical cartridge razor.
  • The touted “SkinSafe Technology” makes a lot more sense now. However, despite this technology I managed to nick myself the one place I had never nicked myself before. I think I didn’t stretch the skin taut in one area and it folded up and went into the blade, despite the guard being there. After that, and some minor triage, I religiously stretched the skin tight and didn’t have any further issues.
  • What I previously thought was a plastic blade is, in fact, a replaceable ceramic blade. While you still potentially have to replace it in the future, I’m a little more hopeful that it will last a long time before needing to be replaced.

Final Thoughts

It’s really good when you use it for the specific use case it was designed for. I will definitely continue to use it. If you do decide to purchase one for yourself or someone else just make sure they know to keep the skin tight and that’s it not meant to be used to shave their head or face.
