  1. #1 Best Private K-12 Schools in AmericaThe Nueva SchoolHillsborough, CA•Private School•PK, K-12•Rating 4.51 out of 5 74 reviewsMiddle school student: Nueva is one of the best schools I have ever been to. My first year attending was in 6th grade, and I am currently a middle school student at the Hillsborough campus. Nueva offers a multitude of opportunities for everyone attending, from those interested in math to individuals pursuing the arts, and with many clubs and electives available with topics ranging from building a lap guitar to creative writing, we can choose what we wish to pursue. An important part of our wonderful learning environment is the supportive, kind faculty: The teachers are mostly extremely trustworthy and know how to cater to everybody's needs and learning style. Our community is also quite nice—our student environment is not very cliquey, and parents are greatly involved in the path of our school. Additionally, from the Hillsborough campus, many acres of beautiful, lush hiking trails are easily accessible, and one can admire the rolling hills that border the school. Nueva is such a wonderful place!... 2. #3 Best Private K-12 Schools in AmericaRiverdale Country SchoolBronx, NY•Private School•PK, K-12•Rating 4.38 out of 5 80 reviewsSenior: Riverdale Country School is a top-level NYC private school; they provide you with the resources you need in order to get into a good college, the prerequisite courses that academically prepare you to succeed at your future college, and provide you with experiences that allow you to mature into an adult. When I first came at Riverdale, I was a freshman and it was during the Corona pandemic. Most of the students had been there since kindergarten and therefore made it extremely difficult to fit in. Also, going to Riverdale from kindergarten or middle school also meant that your family was able to afford the cost to attend. Since I came from a low-income family in Queens, I went through an extreme cultural change. Because of my experiences at Riverdale, I was able to see reality, though at the time it was not the best experience, I find gratitude for it. The teachers provided comfort at times of need, the resources and opportunities available to students are like no othr.... 3. #6 Best Private K-12 Schools in AmericaHorace Mann SchoolBronx, NY•Private School•PK, K-12•Rating 4.32 out of 5 154 reviewsParent: A current HM parent whose child joined 9G, I had big expectations that have been exceeded. I expected the school to nurture our child's intellectual potential, it is the manner in which this has been cultivated that is impressive -- the depth of critical discussions (feels like college-level engagement), feedback for growth, and a deeply personal and caring network of support from student advisers to social and academic issues is intentional, accessible and thoughtful. The school deserves its STEM reputation, not just due to faculty, facilities and rigor, but equally because of the curiosity-driven and creative space teachers bring to the experience. One thing for HM to change is to bring more prominence to more sports that student athletes do well in, from waterpolo to fencing and field hockey etc. Sports and teamwork are also part of the HM equation but are sometimes overlooked.... And, our family has experience at other top DC schools--Potomac School, Sidwell, and Langley School. We have family at Marshall, Yorktown, and TJHS. The academics at BIM are more comprehensive and rigorous . The challenging coursework is designed to prepare students to enter top universities. Most of the BIM students end up attending top 10 universities. This compares to only 25% of the students at GDS or Sidwell and the 20% of the Potomac School kids who go to UVa. BIM students take science, mathematics, history, foreign languages, and arts at a young age. Kids have a chance to explore ideas and write about their findings. The curriculum blends the best teaching methods from Finland, China, and the USA. Material and topics are traditional, but the methods of tiger-team teaching with subject matter expert teachers and home room teachers is superior. Small classes. Lots of parent involvement.... 8. #13 Best Private K-12 Schools in AmericaSidwell Friends SchoolWashington, DC•Private School•PK, K-12•Rating 4.26 out of 5 78 reviewsAlum: A school with very accomplished teachers, highly capable students, and some problems. Academics are absolutely first-rate, and academic integrity is very seriously enforced, far beyond the standards of my college (a top Ivy). However, as at many Quaker schools, the school politics are stifling and highly punitive to students. It is expected and openly stated that students have neither privacy nor rights either in or outside of school to express themselves outside the School's tight political norms. Running afoul of this, whether deliberately or accidentally--or far in the past--results in purges; that is, expulsions. Further, although it takes abounding pride in its value system, the School is largely unsuccessful at transmitting to students any genuine values other than the do-or-die importance of academic achievement. Finally, Sidwell is far from alone among area schools in having disproportionately many suicide and drug deaths among its young alumni. This must never be ignored.... We specifically chose Quarry Lane for our child, because of the utmost importance the school places in developing well-rounded citizens. While the school's alumni profile and test scores definitely highlight their academic excellence, they also provide a very rich and nurturing space for the students to excel in all their chosen activities. The school and the community value kindness and responsible citizenship, and these values are not just spoken but actually reflected in how their students emulate themselves in the real world. My children are happy. The only challenge is the culture has gradually shifted due to the turnover of School Directors / Head of Schools. The school is run by teachers which is both a positive and negative. The admin supports the teachers and the director typically supports the principals of each division or school. There, I met instructors who, after retirement, have shared family meals with me; I met friends who were the best men at my wedding; and, perhaps most importantly, I met myself. I reckoned with the extent of my character, willpower, and intellectual interests. Everyone - students, teachers, administrators, and dinning staff and custodians - was a mentor, educated in academic disciplines and life's troubles and triumphs. Living with moody teenagers, they were Latin teachers, History teachers, English teachers - often willing to answer a random question and share a casual laugh. Dining hall meals were better than they ever were in college, and I now know I took that Saarinen designed architecture, artful campus, and smooth bus rides between campuses for granted. Cooper prides itself on its rigorous curriculum, including its subjects and teachers. Although the homework load may seem overwhelming, you grasp and absorb all the concepts to their fullest, and you don't memorize everything to parrot it back on the test and forget all the information a few weeks later. Thanks to the academic curriculum at Cooper, I feel I have genuinely learned essential, life-long skills. There are many things I love about Avenues, but the Global Journeys programs and Harkness-style classes are two of my favorite aspects. Just this January J-term, I went on a Global Journeys program to Senegal. In small groups, we stayed with homestay families, communicating with them in broken French and hand gestures. Through this experience, we learned more about their culture and gained confidence in dealing with unusual situations. This trip also brought my and my peers closer together—I love waving whenever I see them in the hallways! Another thing that I love about Avenues is the discussion-based classes. In English and World classes, discussing material (plot, themes, historical movements, etc) helps me formulate my ideas and speak succinctly. I felt inspired to become a teacher at BIB, attracted by the freedom to present the curriculum in unique ways and tap into various learning styles. As a parent, I trust my children's teachers and the school's commitment to excellence. As a teacher, I guide students toward critical thinking and find joy in learning. While any student or alum will say there were overwhelming periods (most will go catatonic at some point in junior and/or senior year simply from the stress of college admissions), I would argue that it was all worth it. There isn't much hand-holding past your freshman year, which I now really appreciate having worked at other private schools across the world, as it taught me how to self-direct my studies before starting college. Socially it was warm, the teachers were as a whole supportive and often went above and beyond to make sure we felt confident, checking in on you if you fell behind. Naturally it's a private school in a wealthy area, and so the wealth/class disparity is definitely noticeable. I do believe Baldwin could do a better job of educating the wealthier students about the "other side" - many understand the privilege they have to go to Baldwin, but don't really understand how rare the life they lead is.... If anything, I was way over prepared! They helped me get into my dream school of the University of Miami of which I graduated Magna Cum Laude. The teachers and faculty were incredible and always had my best interest in mind. They even sparked my interest in the career opportunity, mobile app development, through their AP Computer Science courses, of which I am currently pursuing now. Berkely has continued to support me even after graduating high-school and college. They even went as far as giving me the opportunity to apply for an investment through their new program BUC Ventures which invests in startups. 23. #38 Best Private K-12 Schools in AmericaThe Village SchoolHouston, TX•Private School•PK, K-12•Rating 4.22 out of 5 245 reviewsAlum: I am a Village School alum, class of 2021. I spent five years at The Village School, which was a great experience. The teachers and the rigorous curriculum challenged me, made me a better student, and inspired me to take advanced classes I may have otherwise avoided. Outdoor classrooms with school trips, service trips, and guest speakers expanded the learning opportunities. Although I excelled as a student-athlete, the athletic program does not match the rigor of the academics. My club track training helped maintain my competitiveness on the track, but I know I could have experienced more, especially regarding recruiting, if the program was more competitive versus recreational. However, the school never failed to celebrate my athletic successes outside of school. Overall, the all-inclusive culture of The Village School, from academics to athletics to the arts, equips its students with the tools needed to be successful across the globe.... 25. #39 Best Private K-12 Schools in AmericaFulton Science Academy Private SchoolAlpharetta, GA•Private School•PK, K-12•Rating 4.7 out of 5 88 reviewsSenior: This school has amazing extracurriculars, a prime example of this is the Astronomy Society of FSA which has many different clubs that are built on it a couple examples are Astrophotography club where students get to work with amazing telescopes to take fascinating images of the dark sky, Rocketry club where students get to design and build rockets to safely launch them at competitions and many others. It really is great to see how much the school is flexible on spending tens of thousands on equipment as long as the students are wanting to use them. I am very excited about the new innovation center that is opening aswell, which will contain all sorts of high grade equipment to be able to turn our ideas into reality.... 27. #41 Best Private K-12 Schools in AmericaSierra Canyon SchoolChatsworth, CA•Private School•PK, K-12•Rating 4.56 out of 5 117 reviewsAlum: Sierra Canyon has changed me for the better and made sure I was ready for college. I loved the rigorous courses and challenges I faced during my time on campus. However, I did not enjoy the lack of diversity across the board. As a Latino student, I felt outcasted and white washed at times with the lack of representation at the school. I also felt neglected as a female athlete compared the the male athletes on campus who had more opportunities and it clearly was not fair. I would not be happy attending again because of the social dynamics and lack of equity in my education. But, my teachers gave me the resources and skills to be an amazing college student....
