Get ready for a WTA Finals showdown! Aryna Sabalenka and Elena Rybakina are set to battle it out in the final, promising a thrilling conclusion to the 2025 tournament.
Sabalenka, the top seed from Belarus, fought hard to overcome American Amanda Anisimova in a three-set semi-final clash. Their history together added extra spice to the match. Before this encounter, Anisimova had a slight edge in their head-to-head record, leading 6-4. However, Sabalenka had already tasted victory against her this year, winning the US Open final in straight sets.
The semi-final began with both players fiercely defending their serves, leading to several tense deuces. Sabalenka managed to secure the first break in the fifth game. Anisimova, facing a 5-3 deficit, faltered with two double faults, allowing Sabalenka to break again and claim the first set 6-3.
Anisimova, however, quickly regrouped in the second set, breaking Sabalenka's serve twice early on to take a commanding 4-0 lead. Despite Sabalenka's comeback attempt, Anisimova responded with another break to win the set 6-3.
The deciding set saw both players holding serve until the seventh game, where Sabalenka secured a crucial break. She then fought off a break point in the eighth game. Leading 5-3, she broke again to seal the victory with a 6-3 score.
After the match, Sabalenka expressed her satisfaction, stating, "Honestly, I wouldn't care if I would've lost this match, because I think we played an incredible match and both of us deserve this place in the Finals. That was an incredible fight and I'm super happy to get the win."
In the other semi-final, Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan showcased her powerful serve, firing 15 aces to defeat American Jessica Pegula. This victory extended Rybakina's winning streak to 10 matches, marking her first time in the tournament's final. The scores were 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.
But here's where it gets controversial... Some might argue that the head-to-head record between Sabalenka and Anisimova, favoring Anisimova before this match, added extra pressure on Sabalenka.
What do you think? Will Sabalenka's recent form give her the edge in the final, or can Rybakina continue her winning streak? Share your thoughts in the comments!
