Spicy chilli onion chutney for idli dosa. Nothing can beat hot idlies and a spicy chutney breakfast. Treat for a spice lover.
Am here with a quick post. Easy recipe. Nothing can beat hot idlies and a spicy chutney breakfast.
I am hot and spice lover. I want everything hot! And I always look for different chutney recipes to try as I hate to repeat the same chutney every time.
So few days back, a reader friend- Dharini Umapathy (who calls me akka and shares her life events too) told me this simple chutney, her grandma used to make and I instantly loved it.
Coz its simple, sound spicy and flavorful too. So I tried the very next day and loved it a lot. We make a similar one sans garlic and curry leaves.
But this tempted me to try. So here’s the recipe without my blah blah blahs.
Instructions
- Peel onion, garlic and place all the ingredients in the mixer. Grind it to a slightly coarse paste with 3 tblsp of water.
- In a kadai, heat oil and temper with the items given under ‘To temper’ table and pour the ground chutney. Stir for just a minute and transfer to serving bowl.
Serve this spicy chilli onion chutney with hot hot idli and you will never know how many idlies you ate. சில பல இட்லிகள் உள்ள போகும்! 😃

Servings 3 people
Cup measurements
Ingredients
- 8 Small onion chinna vengayam
- 8 Red chilli
- 1 Garlic flake
- 1 sprig Curry leaves
- Salt
To temper
- 2 teaspoon Oil
- ½ teaspoon Mustard
- 1 teaspoon Urad dal
Instructions
Peel onion, garlic and place all the ingredients in the mixer.
Grind it to a slightly coarse paste with 3 tablespoon of water.
In a kadai, heat oil and temper with the items given under ‘To temper’ table and pour the ground chutney.
Stir for just a minute and transfer to serving bowl.
Notes
- Shallots (small onions/ chinna vengayam) works best.
- Do not let it boil for long time as the raw smell of onion should be there to taste good.
- Grind coarsely for enjoying a good texture, also if you grind smoothly, it may turn bitter.

All of you whose chutneys turned bitter : Make sure you dont grind the chutney too smooth. Also use Chilli more to balance it. Otherwise nothing in the recipe to turn it bitter. What I tried was spicy not even a bit bitter.

It could be that the shallots in USA & the ones in India maybe different. To remove the bitterness, I added lemon juice & it turned out to be tolerable

Since you are using 8 red chilli and only 8 shallots, I am asking this... Will it be hot spicy ...

Raks Kitchen
Yes, also my shallots are big. So adjust accordingly to your spice level

The chutney came out bitter! What mistake did I do?

It turns bitter if it's ground smooth and taste not balanced well. Make sure to use enough spice and salt. Also consume freshly. Somewhere I read, onion turn bitter after 30 mins. If you want, you can also add a pinch tamarind to avoid this...
