Are you ready for a potentially boring but strategically brilliant fight? Grant Dawson, currently ranked #13 in the UFC Lightweight division, is stepping into the Octagon at UFC 323, and his game plan is raising eyebrows. Forget fireworks; he's aiming for a 'safe, clean' victory against the dangerous Manuel Torres.
This highly anticipated matchup is slated for the "Featured" Prelim of UFC 323, taking place this weekend, December 6, 2025, at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. While Dawson boasts an impressive record in the UFC, save for a swift 33-second knockout loss to Bobby Green, he's often labeled as... well, boring. This reputation, some argue, unfairly overshadows the six finishes he's achieved within the promotion.
But here's where it gets controversial... Dawson doesn't see his style as boring at all. He views it as intelligent and calculated. In a recent interview with James Lynch, Dawson practically spelled out his strategy. When Lynch guessed a decision victory, Dawson enthusiastically agreed.
"Take him down, hump his leg," Dawson stated bluntly. Ouch! He continued, "This is not a criticism, but I’m impressed. I think his longest fight is four minutes and two seconds. That’s how dangerous this guy is. He’s live by the sword, die by the sword. Either he gets finished in the first round, or he finishes people in the first round. I would love a first-round finish, but I don’t see it going that way."
Essentially, Dawson is acknowledging Torres' explosive, high-risk, high-reward fighting style. Torres is known for either quickly finishing his opponents or being finished himself. Dawson wants to avoid that gamble.
"We’re planning on playing this fight super, super smart. Super, super intelligent," Dawson elaborated. "When I fought Bobby Green, the game plan was more high-paced in the first round and I ended up getting caught. That is not the case in this one. We’re going to be safe, clean. I’m going to make him fight me the way I want him to fight me."
And this is the part most people miss... Dawson's strategy isn't just about avoiding risk; it's about exploiting Torres' tendencies. Torres has a staggering 94% finish rate, comprised of eight knockouts and seven submissions – all within the first round. This aggressive style, while exciting, can also leave him vulnerable. Dawson clearly intends to capitalize on that vulnerability with a wrestling-heavy approach. Think of it like a chess match: Dawson is sacrificing immediate thrills for long-term control.
Now, let's be honest, a risk-averse game plan might not win Dawson legions of new fans. It also might not propel him immediately into title contention. However, Dawson understands the path to the top: consistent wins. He's currently riding a three-fight win streak, and another victory, however 'boring,' will only strengthen his case.
So, what do you think? Is Dawson making the right call by prioritizing a safe, strategic victory over a potentially more exciting, but riskier, approach? Is a win a win, regardless of style? Or does the entertainment factor play a significant role in a fighter's career and legacy? Sound off in the comments below!
