In this slightly sweet and delicately balance treat, instead of white sugar, we use a splash of pure maple syrup.

And instead of butter or oil, we use just enough tahini to help the crumbs stick together just right.

Rather than using highly refined bleached white flour for our yummy crumb topping, we use gluten-free brown rice flour tossed into oatmeal.You can use another whole grain flour of your choosing. But we use brown rice flour to keep it light and airy and one-hundred percent gluten-free.

Why Do We Use Multiple Varieties of Apples in our Vegan Gluten-Free Apple Crisp?

You may notice in the photos that there are flecks of red and green in our vegan gluten-free baked apple crumble. Those two colors are visible due to the use of both red and green apples.On that subject, we left the skin on our apples intentionally. The reason we kept the peel is that the most significant antioxidants in apples are five times more prevalent in the skin than in the flesh.

When we first started working on this bakes apples dessert recipe, we thought we would only use green apples because we wanted to use Granny Smith variety for its, especially beneficial, nutrients.

Happily, after researching which apple would be the best red, we found that the Fuji variety offers the highest amount of bioflavonoids. Similar to phytonutrients found in Granny Smith, the bioflavonoids in Fuji apples may fight off cancer and heart disease.   • four apples - enough to equal about four cups or so of washed, chopped, apples -We used two different types of apples
  • 4 to 6 tbsp of freshly squeezedlemon juice- You can use more or less lemon juice, but we like to use about one tablespoon or a bit more per serving.
  • 1/4 cup oftahini- We enjoy cooking withthis organic brand of tahini.
  • 1 tbsp ofpure maple syrup
  • 1 tsp of pure vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup of old fashioned oats - We always recommend using organic oats and opt for this brand that is also gluten-free.
  • 1/4 cup ofbrown rice flouror another flour of choice, gluten-free as needed
  • 1 tsp of cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup of walnuts (set one tablespoon of the nuts aside) - We like cooking with this organic brand of walnuts.
  • An optional dash ofsaltto taste- We like to usepink Himalayan sea saltin most of our recipes.

Instructions

  1. First, preheat your oven to350º Fand prepare four individual serving-sized ramekins or one baking dish large enough to hold about 4 to six cups worth of ingredients.We'd go with a two-quart 8 x 8-inch baking dish for this recipe.
  2. Now, for each ramekin, portion out about 1-cup of theshredded or finely chopped applestopping each with about 1 tbsp oflemon juice.We shredded our apples to accomplish a speedy bake time.Chopped or thinly sliced organic apples also work well.
  3. Next, in a small mixing bowl, combine thetahini, maple syrup,andvanilla.Stir in theoats, flour, cinnamon, and walnuts.Stir and crumble with a fork to be sure the ingredients distribute evenly. Then, please give it a little taste and add a sprinkle ofsea saltas you deem needed.
  4. Once the crumble tastes like perfection, add the crumble topping to the top of the apples.If you're using one single baking pan, sprinkle the crumble evenly across the top of your baking pan filled with apples.
