Watertowine Theatre Co will premiere a new play, which features ten Leonard Cohen songs, in Ireland on Feb 13th and a five-week tour across the country follows. The play is called Who By Fire and is written by award-winning playwright, novelist and documentary maker John MacKenna - who made a number of radio-documentaries with Leonard in the nineties. The play is the story of a woman who returns to Auschwitz concentration camp in 1990, forty-five years aftrer her release from the prison as a teenager. Having lost her family in the camp, she is faced with the memories and the ghosts of that time. The play is not simply a staged event but rather a theatrical experience which begins from the moment the audience enters the foyer - to be stamped and segregated. Nor is there a barrier between actors and audience - once the show begins the audience experience holistically what the actors are experiencing. The play is described as "one that will linger in the memory long after audiences have left the theatre." The songs - which Leonard has given his permission to use - are: Who by fire; First we take Manhattan (rewritten as First We Take the Reichstag with Leonard's permission); Everbody Knows; True Love Leaves No Traces; The Future; I'm Your Man; Halleluijah; Bird on the wire, Take this waltz and If it be your will. The play (it's not a musical but a play with songs) has a cast of 15 including a three-piece band. The following is the list of tour venues:
